Heidi’s Story

In our “Stories of Hope” series, we’re sharing stories of salvation, life-change and God at work in the lives of Living Hope. Heidi Nations shares her journey through seeking validation and love in people, pleasures, or success, but eventually found true fulfillment in her faith relationship with Jesus.

“I didn’t grow up in the church. I had the option to go thanks to my parents who ensured I could attend if I wanted to, but it wasn’t a regular Sunday routine for us. I grew up Lutheran, which was more ritualistic compared to the Baptist churches some of my friends attended. I participated in Vacation Bible Schools and youth activities, but looking back, I didn’t have a real relationship with Christ. It was more about understanding that He died for my sins rather than truly knowing Him.

“I grew up in Florida and moved to Logan County when I was 15, which is a really pivotal age. I was the new kid and didn’t really have community. I went to several churches and something was always off. It didn’t feel like I fit into the puzzle of what they had. It didn’t feel genuine, but now I realize it was the sin in my own heart. It wasn’t until I turned 30 that this realization hit me. I moved to Bowling Green in search of community. I’ve always been a people person and was good at forming friendships, but something was always missing.

I felt empty despite having a successful career, friends, and family. I was trying to fill the void with relationships and other temporary pleasures, power, popularity, possessions. None of it worked. It all felt so empty. I didn’t have peace.

“A friend recommended Living Hope, and although she didn’t show up the day I decided to go, I went alone. That day changed everything. Elliott Pratt and Mark Gillam approached me, introduced themselves, and started a conversation that marked the beginning of my journey with Living Hope.

“Initially, I was cautious. I had been to various churches outside the Lutheran denomination and felt barriers that kept me from fully connecting. Living Hope was a large church and I felt overwhelmed. I was using a vape pen when I first started coming to help calm my anxiety, but honestly it made everything 10 times worse. However, as I started attending more regularly I noticed how genuinely kind and considerate the people were. They cared deeply about the well-being of others, which gradually broke down the walls I had built around myself.

“One significant step in this journey was joining a Tuesday night Bible study with about 20-22 women. This group became my support system and helped me realize that my previous understanding of a relationship with Christ wasn’t what I thought it was. I started to see the difference between knowing about Christ and truly knowing Him.

“This involvement led to deeper conversations with the pastors about faith and baptism. About a year in, I realized that some of the things I was doing wasn’t ok and the ripple effects of sin started causing chaos in my life. In those days, God started showing me these negative aspects of my life and the root cause of them. I knew that if I drew near to God and accepted his forgiveness and experienced his grace, then I would know the peace that comes through a trusting relationship with him. He was there all along and he just wanted me to lean in. Even when you’re in hard trials, he is there and his light shines greater when you start looking to him instead of away from him. I took a leap of faith and trusted Jesus with my life, decided to be baptized and become a member of the church.

“It wasn’t until I let my guard down, inspired by the openness and vulnerability of women in my Bible study group, that I started to see real change in my life. Their stories and honesty allowed me to reflect on my own life and recognize the areas needing change.

“Looking back, I realize I often used people to fill my emotional needs. It’s easy to fall into this trap in a society that promotes self-pleasure. But immersing myself in Bible study and community groups helped me understand that true fulfillment comes from a relationship with Christ. The young adults group I joined kept me accountable and helped me stay on track in my faith journey.

“Scriptures like 2 Timothy 1:7, which I now have tattooed, became my guiding light: “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” These words, among others, reminded me of God’s blessings and love, steering me toward a life centered on Him.

“Now, I can walk into church without anxiety, feeling comfortable and at peace. My affections for the Lord have grown tremendously. I’ve seen the power of prayer and God’s healing in my family’s life. The gospel has really changed everything about my life.

“I’m even preparing for a mission trip 15 hours across the globe to talk about how good he is —something I never imagined. It’s a testament to how deeply my relationship with Christ has changed me. It took me three years, but I’m here, continually growing in faith and embracing the community that has helped transform my life.”
